Research ARCHES
Research Pillars: Housing Security, Health, and Climate
ARCHES will advance knowledge and evidence-based solutions related to problems of housing security, climate, and health in the arid Southwest through 18 research projects on 1) Equitable Housing Growth and Production to Support Hispanic and Underserved Households, 2) Healthy Homes and Aging Communities, and 3) Housing Innovations for Resilience in the Arid Southwest. Our research on Equitable Housing Growth and Production to Support Hispanic and Underserved Households will uncover the drivers and outcomes of racial and ethnic inequities in housing security and solutions to reduce them in the Southwest.
ARCHES will inform equity in housing access, policy and innovative housing design
to support climate resilience and the idea that health starts at home for Hispanic and
underserved communities in the arid Southwest. Our guiding metaphor is the arch. We will build
capacity to create community-engaged knowledge that generates evidence-based solutions to
housing security, climate, and health issues by creating arches among AZ’s three regents
universities – ASU, UA, and NAU – and HSI institutions across the Southwest, including the
UNM. We will elevate the voices of Hispanic and other underrepresented people by identifying
issues and developing solutions that respond to their needs, creating arches between the Center
and these communities. The arch also represents our interdisciplinary and systems research
approach, which addresses interconnections among housing security, climate, and health and
frames housing as an upstream solution to climate and health issues.
