Arizona: Slowly turning red to purple to blue?

The New York Times on Nov. 10 reported on the too-close-to-call Arizona race for the U.S. Senate and other close races, with Democrats making inroads in the traditionaly solid red Republican state. The article read, in part: 

“Welcome to the new Arizona,” said Joseph Garcia, the director of the (Morrison Institute) Latino Public Policy Center at Arizona State University. “We’re slowly shifting from a red conservative state to a blue progressive state. Will this process be smooth at every turn? No way.”
