Candidates, keep the independent voter in mind

In an opinion column in the Arizona Daily Star, Hilary Hiser, deputy town clerk for the Town of Marana, would like to remind
candidates not to forget about independent voters and the importance of the Aug. 28 primary election.

"Independents don’t historically vote during primary elections," she wrote. "(They) tend to have lower overall participation in all types of elections. A 2015 study (Who is Arizona's Independent Voter?) conducted by the ASU Morrison Institute for Public Policy revealed that turnout during primary elections is alarmingly low for Arizona’s independent voters. Given that primary elections essentially decide many races in Arizona, the study concluded that minimal participation by independents during the primary results in almost no impact on local elections."
