Shedding light on the issue of child neglect

KPHO 3TV Phoenix reported that calls into the Department of Child Safety hotline are increasing, as vital community services are getting reduced because of budget cuts.

Erica Quintana, a researcher at Arizona State University's Morrison Institute for Public Policy, is shedding light on the complexity of neglect and possible prevention. Her work recently took her to all reaches of the state to better understand neglect across Arizona.

"Some of the accounts were not pleasant to read through," Quintana said, "even if it doesn't end in physical abuse, the way people think of it, it has some of the same negative impacts on child development."

Quintana found neglect encompasses a huge spectrum and many in the community want to see more training for mandatory reporters, such as teachers and police officers, on what neglect looks like and when to call DCS.
