Sun: An agriculture tour diary

Sunday, January 3, 2016

The Yuma Sun recounted the annual Yuma Area Agricultural Council’s “Ag Tour,” highlighting its special guests and the educational opportunities of showcasing Yuma's agricultural industry and the sciences of farming.

The guest speaker for the evening was Sarah Porter, Director of the Kyl Center for Water Policy (at Morrison Institute). Her presentation was different from the water speeches I had gulped down in the past month, as Sarah’s talk was more forward thinking – a half century more forward thinking. We came away with a greater respect for those before me that made great policy decisions and passed resolutions that put us in pretty good shape today. Sarah’s talk will force us to make similar decisions today to provide for future generations.

In the last 40 years, Yuma County has used 20% less water to produce 25% more product. Its Ag production and water preservation policies, standards, and pride are considered world-class.
