Valdez: Push to give independent voters clout to continue

February 21, 2013

Arizona Republic columnist Linda Valdez writes Feb. 16 that independents outnumber Democrats in Arizona and soon will surpass registered Republicans, but are still treated like second-class citizens and politicians. So, who are these "party not designated" folk?

David Berman, senior research fellow at Arizona State University’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy, says you can’t define independents. They are not really a cohesive group, and they don’t share a political philosophy.

Valdez sums it up her own way: They just wanted out of the nuthouse, so to speak.
