Update: Task Force releases report to save state parks
Nov. 5, 2009
The Task Force on Sustainable State Parks Funding for Arizona, established in March by Governor Jan Brewer, was directed to investigate how to make the parks system financially sustainable.
The Task Force issued its final report October 30, warning "that the State Parks system is in imminent danger of complete collapse" without a reliable source of funding to address capital needs and system operations.
Its final report includes background information and recommendations, including: "a $14 to $15 annual contribution to be collected from owners of non-commercial vehicles as a part of the vehicle registration process. The procceds would be dedicated to the operation, maintenance and capital needs of State Parks. In return, private vehicles bearing Arizona license plates would be admitted free to State Parks."
The 18-page final report also includes references to the Morrison Institute for Public Policy study, “The Price of Stewardship: The Future of Arizona's State Parks.”
